Our approach
In 2024, Goldsmiths, University of London, faced a significant challenge when a third-party platform supplier withdrew from the market, halting plans to transition to a Cayuse repository. In response, Goldsmiths collaborated with CoSector – University of London to reassess and revitalise their existing EPrints-based repository.
CoSector proposed a comprehensive refactor of the current system, centred on an upgrade to EPrints version 3.4.6, hosted securely on Microsoft Azure. This formed the foundation for a modernised, responsive user interface built on Google’s Material Design principles. Specific attention was given to better showcasing media-rich, practice-based research, with custom templates inspired by designs from other creative institutions.
Key enhancements included Elastic Search integration for improved discoverability, streamlined deposit workflows, and simplified management of static content via Easy Pages. Further innovations included experimental support for impact tracking, enhanced REF metadata handling, and notification systems aligned with COAR-Notify principles.
Crucially, the solution aligned closely with Goldsmiths’ needs for improved usability, metadata quality, Open Access compliance, and future scalability. By leveraging EPrints’ flexibility and CoSector’s expertise, the project transformed a critical setback into an opportunity for sustainable repository innovation.
