WHAT WE DO
Student Homes is an accommodation service which sources and manages good quality, well-located accommodation in the private sector for full time students of participating Colleges.
It involves a leasing scheme whereby the University of London leases properties from private landlords and then sublets these flats and houses to our full time students. In a nutshell, for the student their landlord is us and for the property owner we are their tenant.
We offer a tenancy management service and a rent guarantee for the full term of the contract; if the student sub-tenant defaults on their rent, we will still pay you in full. Landlords get guaranteed rent for 52 weeks and will have their property returned in good condition, fair wear-and-tear excepted.
Advertise your property directly to students and some staff at Colleges and Universities from across London. Our registration process is quick, simple and costs as little as £25 per property. We are the largest student accommodation office in London catering for up to 140,000 students.
We offer this service to Landlords and Letting Agencies, and it allows for our customers to upload unlimited property listings. Agencies receive a public listing on our website, and members of the standard and premium membership tiers are invited to use our logos on their website and in publicity materials.
Once you're registered, students and staff will view your adverts online and make direct contact with you to arrange viewings and rent your accommodation.
PRIVATE HOUSING AND ADVICE
Subscription to our Private Housing and Advice service means your students and staff (if required) will be given access to our searchable online database of private landlords, letting agents and private halls who all complete our registration process and sign up to our Code of Good Practice.
We provide legal advice and support to students who are either about to move into private accommodation for the first time or are already experiencing problems. This advice is delivered by a dedicated team of housing advisors supported by a firm of retained housing solicitors. In addition, we organise events and print publications designed to equip students with the knowledge and confidence to navigate London’s private rental market.
Student housing support is crucial to the student experience, especially in London. Our service, in bolstering the student experience you already offer, can play a key role in ensuring you recruit and retain students.
Training for housing advisors
Housing law is notoriously complicated and the skills needed to advise students need to be constantly updated.
Our training is primarily aimed at accommodation and student support staff working within Universities and Student Unions who, as part of their day-to-day remit, give housing advice to students living in private rented housing. Student sabbatical officers and others who offer housing advice to private tenants may also find the training beneficial.
Our courses are delivered by our Housing Advice Team together with our retained housing solicitors and a range of experts from the sector.
We deliver a series of paid-for webinars on a range of subjects that are key to both maintaining and improving student satisfaction levels. Recent webinars have covered “Mental Health Awareness” and “Supporting Chinese students with the cultural transition to UKHE.”
The webinars encourage audience participation and a virtual classroom experience. Attendees have found the webinars to be a more engaging learning experience than the traditional classroom experience. They are also highly cost effective with sessions limited to 30 attendees and costing from as little as £50.
The University of London is uniquely well placed to advise smaller institutions on meeting their student accommodation needs. We have extensive knowledge of the market in Purpose Built Student Accommodation and have been highly influential in developing student housing planning policies with the GLA.
In addition, we have a wealth of research knowledge gained from surveys about what students are looking for and value in their accommodation.
